Introduction

In the late 1990s, the platforming genre was reaching its peak, and few characters were as iconic as the orange marsupial from the Wumpa Islands. Released in 1998, Crash Bandicoot: Warped, often simply referred to as Crash 3 or Crash Bandicoot 3, represents the pinnacle of Naughty Dog's original trilogy on the PlayStation. This title refined the formula established by its predecessors, introducing higher production values, more diverse level designs, and a time-traveling theme that allowed for incredible creative freedom. Whether you know it as the standard western title or by its localized Japanese name, クラッシュ・バンディクー3 ~ブッとび!世界一周~, the game remains a masterclass in 32-bit era game design.

Story & Setting

The narrative picks up immediately after the events of the second game. Following the destruction of Doctor Neo Cortex's space station, a piece of debris crashes into an ancient monument, liberating the malevolent spirit Uka Uka. As the evil twin of Aku Aku, Uka Uka joins forces with Cortex and the time-manipulating Doctor Nefarious Tropy. Together, they create the Time Twister, a machine designed to harvest powerful crystals from different eras of history. To prevent a temporal catastrophe, Crash and his sister Coco must travel through time to collect 25 crystals before their enemies can use them to enslave the world. This journey takes players from the prehistoric era and the Middle Ages to the Great Wall of China and a futuristic neon cityscape.

Gameplay

Crash Bandicoot: Warped expanded the series' mechanics significantly. While it retains the linear, hallway-style platforming of the first two entries, it introduces many new elements. The game is centered around the Time Twister hub, which is split into five distinct chambers. Each chamber contains five portals leading to various levels, and the player must find a hidden crystal in each to progress. For the first time in the series, Coco Bandicoot is fully playable in specific stages, bringing her own unique style to levels involving jet skis and tiger rides across the Great Wall.

One of the most praised additions was the power-up system. After defeating a boss at the end of each chamber, Crash earns a new ability, such as the double jump, the death-tornado spin, or the fan-favorite fruit bazooka. These abilities allow players to return to earlier levels to find secrets or complete time trials. The variety is further enhanced by vehicular stages, including motorcycle races in the 1950s and biplane dogfights over the ocean, making it the most diverse entry in the original series.

Platforms

This game was released on several platforms, including the original PlayStation and later digital versions for modern handhelds and consoles.

Legacy

Crash Bandicoot: Warped was lauded by critics upon release and is frequently cited as one of the best video games of all time. It was a massive commercial success, selling millions of copies worldwide and cementing Crash as a global mascot. The game was particularly successful in Japan, where it was released under titles like Crash Bandicoot 3 Buttobi! Sekai Isshuu and Crash Bandicoot 3: Flying! Globe-Trotting. Its legacy persists today through the N. Sane Trilogy remaster, which brought the game's vibrant colors and tight controls to a new generation of players. It stands as a testament to Naughty Dog's ability to maximize the hardware of the era while maintaining a level of charm and difficulty that remains timeless.

Fun Facts

Interestingly, the Japanese version of the game included several localized changes, such as different hint videos and a more 'kawaii' (cute) redesign for Crash on the box art. It was also released under various descriptive titles in different regions, such as Crash Bandicoot 3: Let's Go! Around the World. Another fun fact is that the game's secret levels can only be accessed by finding hidden exits in standard levels or by earning a specific number of relics in Time Trial mode. Furthermore, this was the first game in the series to implement a dedicated Time Trial mode, which added significant replay value and would later become a staple of the platforming genre.
