Paperboy 2

Paperboy 2

Introduction

Released in 1991, Paperboy 2 serves as the ambitious sequel to the 1985 arcade smash hit that defined the high-stakes world of suburban newspaper delivery. While the original was an arcade-first experience later ported to home systems, this sequel—sometimes stylized as Paperboy II—was designed specifically for the home console market. It took everything players loved about the frantic, obstacle-dodging original and dialed the absurdity up to eleven. With expanded movement, new hazards, and the long-awaited inclusion of a female protagonist, the game solidified itself as a staple of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, challenging players to keep their subscribers happy while surviving a neighborhood that seems actively determined to kill them.

Story & Setting

The narrative of Paperboy 2 is simple but effective: you are a young entrepreneur looking to make a living by delivering the local news. The game is set in a sprawling, surreal version of American suburbia. You start your week on Monday and must survive through Sunday to complete the game. The neighborhood is divided into three distinct difficulty levels: Easy Street, Middle Road, and The Hard Way. As you progress, the world becomes increasingly hostile. What starts as a simple residential block quickly turns into a gauntlet of chaos where even the environment itself seems to have a grudge against the local delivery staff. Your goal is to keep your current subscribers while attempting to win back those who have cancelled their service by showcasing your expert aim and resilience.

Gameplay

The core mechanics of Paperboy 2 expand significantly on its predecessor. For the first time, players can deliver papers to houses on both sides of the street. This requires a much higher level of spatial awareness and timing, as you must flick papers left and right while steering your bicycle through a minefield of obstacles.

Your primary objective is to toss papers into the mailboxes or onto the doorsteps of subscribers (indicated by their brightly colored houses). Accuracy is rewarded with points and continued subscriptions. Conversely, if you miss a delivery or break a subscriber's window, they will cancel their subscription the following day. However, the game encourages a bit of mischief; you can earn extra points by breaking the windows or hitting the decorative lawn ornaments of non-subscribers.

Survival is the true challenge. The road is filled with traditional hazards like stray dogs, runaway tires, and cars, but Paperboy 2 introduces supernatural and bizarre elements. You’ll have to dodge ghosts, avoid vampires, and even weave through cannonballs fired from a neighbor’s yard. At the end of each daily route, you enter a stunt-filled training course where you can earn bonus points by hitting targets and jumping ramps before the timer runs out.

Legacy

Paperboy 2 is remembered fondly as a rare example of a console-first sequel that successfully captured the spirit of an arcade original. By moving away from the arcade hardware, developer Mindscape was able to lean into the more whimsical and
