The Lost Vikings 2

The Lost Vikings 2

Introduction

In the mid-1990s, the puzzle-platformer genre was defined by a few standout titles, but none possessed the charm, humor, and brain-teasing complexity of Blizzard Entertainment’s favorite trio of Norsemen. Often referred to simply as Lost Vikings 2 or by its expanded title, The Lost Vikings 2 Norse by Norsewest, this sequel took everything that made the original a classic and dialed it up to eleven. Combining tactical character switching with vibrant level design, the game challenged players to use logic and timing to navigate treacherous environments spanning across time and space.

Story & Setting

The narrative picks up after the trio’s first escape from the intergalactic zoo. Erik the Swift, Olaf the Stout, and Baleog the Fierce are enjoying their freedom until they are once again abducted by the nefarious alien overlord, Tomator. However, during a timely blackout on the alien ship, the Vikings manage to overpower a robotic guard and dismantle it for parts, gaining high-tech upgrades in the process.

This sets off a sprawling journey across various historical and fantastical locales, from the dark forests of Transylvania to the gritty streets of a pirate ship. The stakes are personal this time: Will the Vikings find their way home across time and space? Will Erik lead his brothers to safety without bonking himself back into thinking he's an iguana? Will Olaf be reunited with his wife and daughters? And perhaps most importantly for the group’s morale, will Baleog ever get a date with Freya, that Valkyrie babe on the "Resume Game" screen? The story is told through witty dialogue and humorous cutscenes that keep the player invested in the brothers' domestic concerns as much as their survival.

Gameplay

Core gameplay remains focused on the unique synergy between characters. In The Lost Vikings 2, players control three characters at a time, switching between them to utilize their specific abilities to reach each level's exit. Erik can jump and smash overhead walls with his new turbo boots; Baleog uses a bionic arm to grapple across gaps or punch enemies; and Olaf can use his shield to glide or shrink down to fit into tiny crevices.

Adding to the complexity, the sequel introduces two new playable allies: Fang the Wolf and Scorch the Dragon. Fang can jump high and cling to walls, while Scorch can fly and spit fire. The puzzles are intricately designed so that no single character can succeed alone; every move must be coordinated. Whether it is using Olaf as a platform for Erik or having Baleog clear a path of enemies, the game demands lateral thinking and mastery of the characters' expanded move sets.

Platforms

This game was released on several platforms, including the Super Nintendo and later 32-bit systems which featured updated pre-rendered graphics and voice acting.

  • SUPER NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM: PAL, NTSC-U

Legacy

The Lost Vikings 2 is remembered as a peak example of 2D puzzle-platforming. While the shift from the original’s pixel art to the 32-bit version's pre-rendered 3D look in The Lost Vikings 2 Norse by Norsewest was polarizing for some fans, the core mechanics remained flawless. It helped cement Blizzard’s reputation for deep, polished gameplay long before they became a titan of the RPG and RTS genres. The characters have since lived on in the hearts of retro gamers and even made a triumphant return as a playable "hero" unit in Heroes of the Storm, proving that these Vikings are truly timeless.

Fun Facts

  • The game’s alternate title, "Norse by Norsewest," is a clever pun on the Alfred Hitchcock film North by Northwest.
  • If Erik takes too much damage or hits his head too hard, he occasionally references his "iguana" delusion, a callback to his fragile mental state mentioned in the game's manual.
  • Unlike the first game, which featured only the three Vikings, the sequel's addition of Fang and Scorch was a major departure that changed the puzzle dynamics significantly.
  • The SNES version was one of the last major titles for the console, pushing the hardware to its absolute limits with its complex AI and physics-based puzzles.
