In the golden age of the 16-bit era, few titles captured the imagination and tested the reflexes of gamers quite like Pocky & Rocky. Originally released in Japan as KiKi KaiKai: Nazo no Kuro Manto (and sometimes referred to as KiKi KaiKai: Nazo no Kuro Mantle), this title is a vibrant blend of traditional Japanese folklore and intense shoot 'em up action. Developed by the legendary Natsume, it moved away from the traditional sci-fi aesthetics of the genre, opting instead for a "cute 'em up" style that masked a notoriously steep difficulty level. With its colorful sprites and tight controls, it quickly became a standout gem in the Super Nintendo library.
The adventure begins at a serene Shinto shrine, where the maiden Pocky is enjoying a quiet cup of tea. Her peace is abruptly shattered when Rocky the Raccoon, a member of the Nopino Goblins, arrives in a state of panic. Rocky explains that his fellow goblins have suddenly lost their minds and turned aggressive for no apparent reason. Suspecting that a dark, mysterious force has cast a spell over the Nopino Goblins, Rocky pleads for Pocky’s help.
Setting off from the shrine, the duo embarks on an epic journey across feudal Japan. Their quest takes them through haunted forests, eerie cemeteries, and treacherous mountain passes. As they battle through waves of enchanted creatures and malevolent spirits, they must uncover the identity of the entity controlling the goblins and put an end to the chaos before the land is consumed by darkness.
Pocky & Rocky is a multi-directional scrolling shooter viewed from an overhead perspective. Unlike horizontal or vertical shmups, players have the freedom to move in eight directions, allowing for a more dynamic exploration of the levels. Pocky attacks using ofuda cards to strike from a distance and a purification rod for close-quarters combat. Rocky, on the other hand, tosses enchanted leaves and uses his tail as a melee weapon.
A key mechanic that sets the game apart is the ability to use melee attacks to reflect enemy projectiles back at them. This adds a strategic layer to the gameplay, requiring players to time their swings perfectly to survive the "bullet hell" moments. The game truly shines in its cooperative multiplayer mode, where players can team up to perform special sliding attacks and cover each other's blind spots. The difficulty is high, punctuated by massive, screen-filling bosses that require pattern recognition and nerves of steel to defeat.
This classic title found its home on the premiere 16-bit hardware of the time, appearing on both the Japanese and Western versions of Nintendo's flagship console.
The legacy of Pocky & Rocky is defined by its cult-classic status and its reputation as one of the most polished titles on the SNES. It spawned a direct sequel and several spiritual successors, maintaining a dedicated fanbase for decades. Natsume’s commitment to high-quality pixel art and challenging gameplay ensured that the title remained relevant even as the industry moved into 3D. Recently, the series saw a massive resurgence with the release of Pocky & Rocky Reshrined, a title that both remastered the original experience and added new content, proving that the charm of Pocky and Rocky is timeless.
