Spyro: Year of the Dragon

Spyro: Year of the Dragon

Introduction

Spyro: Year of the Dragon is widely regarded as the masterpiece of the original PlayStation trilogy. Released in 2000, it marked the final time Insomniac Games would take the helm of their fire-breathing mascot's adventures. Often referred to by fans as Spyro 3, the game represents a culmination of technical prowess and creative level design. It pushed the aging PlayStation hardware to its absolute limits, offering vibrant colors, expansive draw distances, and a buttery-smooth frame rate. Whether you were a veteran of the previous two entries or a newcomer, the game invited everyone into a whimsical yet challenging world filled with personality. Its success solidified Spyro as a global icon, even leading to international versions known as Spyro: El año del dragón in Spanish-speaking territories.

Story & Setting

The narrative begins in the Dragonworld during the celebratory Year of the Dragon, an event that occurs once every twelve years when new dragon eggs are brought to the realm. The festivities are cut short when a mysterious rabbit girl named Bianca leads an army of Rhynocs through holes in the ground to steal all 150 eggs. These eggs are taken to the "Forgotten Worlds," an area on the other side of the planet that the dragons haven't visited in a thousand years. Spyro, being the only dragon small enough to fit through the holes, is tasked with retrieving the eggs and saving the future of his kind. As the story unfolds, Spyro discovers that the Forgotten Worlds are ruled by the tyrannical Sorceress, whose magic is fading, and she needs the dragon wings to restore her power. The setting is diverse, ranging from snowy peaks to volcanic craters, all tied together by a sense of ancient mystery.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Spyro: Year of the Dragon took the foundation of the previous titles and injected a massive amount of variety. While Spyro still retains his signature charge and flame attacks, along with the headbash and climbing abilities from the second game, he now gains access to specialized vehicles. Players can pilot tanks, submarines, and speedboats to navigate specific challenges. A significant addition is the introduction of four new playable characters, each with their own unique mechanics. Sheila the Kangaroo offers high-jumping platforming, Sergeant Byrd provides aerial combat as a flying penguin, Bentley the Yeti brings raw strength for brawling, and Agent 9 introduces third-person shooter elements. Furthermore, the game famously introduced skateboarding segments, heavily influenced by the extreme sports trend of the era, which became a fan-favorite minigame.

Platforms

This game was released on several platforms, including the original PlayStation and later digital versions for modern consoles. The availability of the game has spanned multiple generations, allowing both original hardware enthusiasts and new players to experience the journey.

Legacy

The legacy of Spyro: Year of the Dragon is one of excellence and transition. It was Insomniac Games' swan song for the series before they moved on to create the Ratchet & Clank franchise. The game received critical acclaim for its graphics, soundtrack—composed once again by Stewart Copeland of The Police—and the sheer volume of content. It is often cited as one of the best 3D platformers of all time. The "Forgotten Worlds" and the introduction of a larger cast of characters paved the way for the series' future, even if subsequent developers struggled to capture the same magic. Decades later, the game was meticulously remade as part of the Reignited Trilogy, proving that its level design and charm are truly timeless.

  • Despite being a "Year of the Dragon" according to the Chinese zodiac, the game was actually released in the year 2000, which indeed was the Year of the Metal Dragon.
  • If you look closely at the Sorceress's lair, you can find various easter eggs referencing previous Insomniac projects.
  • The game features a dynamic difficulty adjustment system; if a player is struggling with a certain section, the game subtly makes enemies easier or adjustments to jumps to ensure progress.
