Known in Japan as Rockman World and in Germany as Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Rache, this title was not just a simple port of the NES classics. The narrative finds the titular Dr. Wily in his usual state of maniacal ambition. After his previous defeats at the hands of the Blue Bomber on the NES, Wily has retreated to his secret laboratory to concoct a new scheme for global domination. He has resurrected some of his most formidable Robot Masters, setting up eight empires of mechanical terror that Mega Man must dismantle. The setting transitions from classic industrial landscapes and frozen peaks to the high-tech, trap-filled corridors of Wily’s orbital fortress. It is a world where every ledge and ladder could lead to a confrontation with a mechanical menace, and Mega Man must survive this gauntlet to finally break into Dr. Wily's lab and put an end to his quest for vengeance.
Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge maintains the core run-and-gun mechanics that made the series famous, but with smart adjustments for the smaller screen. Players initially choose from four Robot Masters: Cut Man, Elec Man, Ice Man, and Fire Man. Upon defeating them and claiming their unique weapons, Mega Man progresses to Wily's lab, where he faces a second wave of bosses including Quick Man, Bubble Man, Flash Man, and Heat Man.
The difficulty is notorious; if you have experienced this franchise before, you know it is no day at the beach. Players must contend with the "stompin' cyclops"—the massive Big Eye robots—which require precise timing to slip under or blast away before they crush you. The "swooping copterheads" provide a constant aerial threat that can catch players off guard during tight platforming sequences. One of the most dangerous obstacles involves the giant fan hazards found in certain stages. If the giant fan is blowing, only a perfectly timed ledge-jump will save Mega Man from being shoved into a pit of instant-death spikes. The gameplay culminates in a battle with a brand-new "Mega Man Hunter" named Enker, who wields a kinetic-energy-absorbing spear called the Mirror Buster.
