In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the side-scrolling shooter genre was dominated by gritty science fiction and high-stakes interstellar warfare. Konami, already a master of the genre with the Gradius series, decided to flip the script. The result was Parodius, a vibrant, bizarre, and utterly hilarious subversion of every convention the genre held dear. While its name is a portmanteau of "Parody" and "Gradius," the game quickly established its own identity as a premier "cute-'em-up." Whether you know it as Parodius: Non-Sense Fantasy or by its energetic Japanese title, Parodius Da!: Shinwa kara Owarai he, the game remains a masterclass in combining tight mechanical precision with absolute absurdity.
The narrative of Parodius is as nonsensical as its visuals suggest. The game takes us to a surreal version of 1993, a year described as "What A Wonderful World!" despite the rather grim circumstances surrounding it. In this alternate history, the people of Earth have lost everything—their hopes, their dreams, and their financial stability. However, the true threat is more cosmic and peculiar: rumors suggest that the Great Octopus is descending upon the Earth. This impending arrival signals total war, but not a war fought with cold steel and lasers, but rather one filled with laughing enemies, dancing penguins, and giant showgirls. Often subtitled as It's Parodius!: From Myth to Laughter, the setting moves from traditional space stations to graveyard parades and neon-lit bathhouses.
At its core, Parodius Da! retains the polished mechanics of the Gradius series but introduces a diverse roster of characters, each with unique weapon sets. Players can choose from the classic Vic Viper, the mischievous Octopus, the bell-hopping TwinBee, or the adorable penguin Pentarou. Each character utilizes the iconic power-up bar system where collecting pods allows the player to cycle through speed boosts, missiles, and various laser types.
Adding another layer of complexity is the
