Kid Icarus

Introduction

Released during the golden age of the 8-bit era, Kid Icarus is a genre-blending masterpiece that remains one of the most unique titles in Nintendo's storied history. Known in Japan as Hikari Shinwa: Palutena no Kagami, which translates to Light Mythology: Palutena's Mirror or Myth of Light: The Mirror of Palutena, the game has earned a cult following across the globe. In some regions, it is even known by local variations like Хлапето Икар or Младия Икар. Often described as a sister title to the original Metroid due to its shared engine and development team, Kid Icarus offers a distinct challenge that mixes vertical platforming with ancient Greek-inspired mythology. It stands as a testament to the experimental spirit of early console gaming, demanding precision, patience, and strategy from those brave enough to guide its protagonist through the dangers of the Underworld and beyond.

Story & Setting

The plot of Kid Icarus revolves around protagonist Pit's quest for three sacred treasures, which he must equip to rescue the Grecian fantasy world of Angel Land and its ruler, the goddess Palutena. Long ago, the world was ruled by two goddesses: Palutena, who watched over the humans, and Medusa, who despised them. In retaliation for Medusa's cruelty, Palutena transformed her into a hideous monster and banished her to the Underworld. However, Medusa eventually gathered an army of monsters, launched a counter-attack, and imprisoned Palutena. Before her capture, Palutena sent a magical bow to a young angel named Pit, who was trapped in the Underworld. Pit must now battle through four distinct realms—the Underworld, Overworld, Sky World, and the Palace in the Sky—to reclaim the Wings of Pegasus, the Mirror Shield, and the Light Arrows to defeat Medusa once and for all.

Gameplay

Kid Icarus is an action platform video game that incorporates elements from various genres. The player controls Pit through platform areas while fighting monsters and collecting items. The game is famous for its hybrid structure; the first and third stages are vertically scrolling platformers, while the second stage scrolls horizontally. The objective is to reach the end of the levels and to find and defeat boss monsters that guard the three treasures.

One of the defining features of the gameplay is its difficulty progression. Unlike most games where the difficulty increases over time, Kid Icarus is notoriously difficult at the very beginning, when Pit is weak and has a short health bar. As players defeat enemies, they earn hearts, which act as currency in black markets and shops. By completing training rooms and performing well in levels, Pit can earn permanent strength upgrades and health expansions. The gameplay loop requires a careful balance of combat and exploration, as finding hidden chambers is often necessary to survive the brutal boss encounters waiting at the end of each major realm.

Platforms

This game was released on several platforms, including the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Family Computer Disk System, and has since been made available on modern digital storefronts.

Legacy

The legacy of Kid Icarus is one of enduring affection despite long periods of dormancy for the franchise. While Pit did not receive a new home console entry for decades after the NES era, his inclusion in the Super Smash Bros. series revitalized interest in the character. This eventually led to the 2012 release of Kid Icarus: Uprising on the 3DS, which reimagined the series as a high-octane rail shooter and third-person action game. The original 8-bit title is remembered for its high difficulty, memorable soundtrack by Hirokazu "Hip" Tanaka, and its imaginative blend of RPG elements with platforming. It remains a staple of "best of" lists for the NES and is a frequent subject for speedrunners due to its tight mechanics and exploitable glitches.

Fun Facts

  • There are five different endings in the game, which are determined by the player’s score and the number of upgrades collected throughout the journey.
  • Despite its Grecian theme, the game includes several bizarre elements, such as the "Monolith" enemies which resemble the structures from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
