The Valis series has long been celebrated by fans of 16-bit action for its blend of fast-paced platforming and cinematic storytelling. While the franchise originally found its home on Japanese computers and the PC Engine, Super Valis IV brought the legendary struggle for the Dream World to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). Known in Japan as Sūpā Varisu Akaki Tsuki no Otome, or Super Valis: Red Moon Rising Maiden, this entry marked a significant turning point for the series by introducing a brand-new protagonist and passing the torch from the legendary heroine Yuko to a new generation of warriors.
The narrative of Super Valis IV picks up years after the climactic events of the previous installments. The world was once threatened by a prince named Gallagher, who was entrusted with a magical ring of immense power. Unfortunately, Gallagher lacked the mental fortitude to control the artifact and was consumed by its dark influence. To protect the realm, the mad prince was sealed away in a crystal. However, the seal has finally broken, and Gallagher has returned with a vengeance, intent on conquering the Dream World and wreaking havoc across the dimensions.
While the previous protagonist, Yuko, has ascended to the status of a goddess, she can no longer directly intervene in the mortal realm as a warrior. Instead, the story follows Lena, a spirited young girl who aspires to become the next Valis warrior. To stop Gallagher's evil plans, Lena must embark on a perilous journey to prove her worth to Yuko and demonstrate that she is capable of wielding the sacred Sword of Valis.
True to the series' roots, Super Valis IV is a side-scrolling action platformer that emphasizes precision movement and combat. Players control Lena as she navigates through various treacherous levels, ranging from mystical forests to high-tech fortresses. Lena primarily uses the Sword of Valis for melee attacks, but she also has access to powerful magic spells.
Unlike modern games where magic might regenerate over time, here players must gather specific items dropped by enemies to fuel their mystical abilities. Management of these resources is key, especially when approaching the end of a level where a massive boss battle awaits. These bosses require players to learn patterns and use their magic strategically. Between the action, the game features the series' signature anime-style cutscenes, which utilize the SNES's capabilities to advance the plot and flesh out the characters' motivations.
This game was released specifically for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, bringing the franchise's unique aesthetic to a wider global audience during the height of the 16-bit era.
Super Valis IV remains a notable title in the SNES library, particularly for collectors of "Magical Girl" and anime-inspired action games. While it was a departure from the PC Engine version of Valis IV (which featured multiple playable characters), the SNES version focused on a streamlined, polished experience centered entirely on Lena. The alternative title, Super Valis: Red Moon Rising Maiden, highlights the game's more atmospheric and dramatic tone. The series' influence can still be seen today in modern indie titles that prioritize cinematic interludes within retro-style platforming frameworks.
