Gun

Introduction

Before the landscape of open-world Westerns was dominated by a few major franchises, there was Gun. Developed by Neversoft—the studio famous for the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series—and published by Activision in 2005, Gun was a gritty, cinematic venture into the American Old West. It aimed to capture the visceral and often violent reality of life on the frontier, moving away from the sanitized "cowboy" tropes often seen in older media. For many players during the sixth generation of consoles, Gun served as the definitive Western experience, blending a reactive open-world environment with intense third-person action and a story that pulled no punches.

Story & Setting

The narrative follows Colton White, a young man who finds himself orphaned and seeking vengeance after a horrific steamboat explosion claims the life of his father, Ned. The story is a classic tale of revenge, but it is layered with themes of betrayal, racial tension, and the corrupting influence of industrialization in a lawless land. Colton's journey takes him across the harsh landscapes of Dodge City, Empire City, and the vast wilderness in between. The setting is intentionally bleak and brutal, reflecting a historical period where survival often meant outdrawing the next man. Players encounter a diverse cast of characters, including outlaws, corrupt officials, and indigenous tribes, all while uncovering a conspiracy involving a legendary lost city of gold.

Gameplay

Gun is an action-adventure game that utilizes a third-person perspective and emphasizes high-octane gunplay. One of its standout mechanics is "Quickdraw," which allows players to slow down time and switch to a first-person view to pick off multiple enemies with precision—a clear precursor to the slow-motion mechanics seen in later Western titles. Players can utilize a variety of authentic weapons, including revolvers, shotguns, rifles, and even bows or TNT. Transportation is handled primarily on horseback, and the game’s horse mechanics were highly praised at the time for their responsiveness and the ability to trample enemies. Beyond the main story, the open world offers several side activities, such as poker games, bounty hunting, cattle herding, and mining for gold to upgrade Colton's equipment and stats.

Platforms

This game was released on several platforms, including the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo GameCube.

Legacy

Gun was a critical and commercial success upon its release, lauded for its high production values and cinematic flair. It featured a star-studded voice cast including Thomas Jane, Kris Kristofferson, and Ron Perlman, which helped ground the narrative in a way few games did at the time. While its world was smaller than modern open-world titles, its density and atmosphere were pioneering. It proved that there was a massive appetite for mature, realistic Western games. Though it never received a direct sequel, fans still remember it as a high-water mark for developer Neversoft, proving they could master genres outside of extreme sports.
