Ys V Expert

Ys V Expert

Introduction

In the mid-90s, the action-RPG landscape was shifting, and Nihon Falcom’s legendary Ys series was right at the center of that evolution. Originally released in 1995 as Ys V: Kefin, The Lost City of Sand, the game was met with a polarizing reception due to its perceived lack of difficulty. Responding to the feedback of dedicated fans, Falcom returned to the drawing board to release an enhanced version just a year later. Known as Ys V Expert, this 1996 update for the Super Famicom was designed specifically for those who felt Adol Christin’s fifth journey was too much of a stroll through the desert. It remains a fascinating piece of gaming history, representing a bridge between the series' 8-bit roots and its more complex future.

Story & Setting

The narrative of Ys V Expert follows the perennial adventurer Adol Christin as he travels to the distant land of Xandria. Lured by tales of a legendary city that vanished into the sands five hundred years prior, Adol finds himself entangled in a plot involving ancient alchemy and a forgotten civilization. The setting of Xandria provides a refreshing change of pace for the series, trading lush forests for sprawling deserts, hidden oases, and ancient ruins. As Adol searches for the "Lost City of Kefin," he must navigate the politics of local factions and stop a group of alchemists who seek to harness a power that once brought the world to its knees. The story is a classic Ys adventure, emphasizing exploration and the discovery of lost lore.

Gameplay

Ys V Expert marked a significant departure from the "bump combat" system that defined the earlier entries. Instead, it introduced a dedicated attack button, allowing for manual sword swings, and a jump button for platforming and dodging. The combat is fluid and fast-paced, but the "Expert" version significantly ramps up the challenge. Enemies are faster, more aggressive, and have substantially higher health pools compared to the original 1995 release.

A standout mechanic is the Alchemy system. Rather than finding pre-made spells, Adol must collect elemental stones to craft magical orbs. This adds a layer of customization and resource management to the gameplay. Additionally, the game emphasizes the use of Adol’s shield; players must manually block incoming projectiles and strikes, a mechanic that becomes vital in the Expert version’s grueling boss encounters. The Expert edition also features adjusted dungeon layouts and more punishing trap placements to test the reflexes of veteran players.

Platforms

This game was released as a specialized version for the Super Famicom hardware in the Japanese market.

Legacy

Ys V Expert is often remembered as the "swan song" for the series on the Super Famicom. While it didn't achieve the same global recognition as Ys I & II or the later Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, it holds a special place in the hearts of series completionists. For many years, it was considered the definitive way to experience Adol’s Xandrian adventure because it addressed the balancing issues of the original release. Interestingly, while most other mainline Ys games have received modern remakes (such as The Oath in Felghana or Memories of Celceta), Ys V remains the only entry yet to be fully reimagined for modern consoles, making this version a crucial piece of the series' lineage.
