The Kunio-kun series has long been a staple of the beat 'em up genre, known for its unique blend of delinquent culture, high-school rivalry, and surprisingly deep mechanics. Among its many entries, River City Renegade, known in Japan as Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun, stands out as a pivotal transition for the franchise. Released during the 16-bit era, it moved away from the more caricatured "chibi" style of its NES predecessors in favor of realistic proportions and a grittier, more atmospheric tone. This title represents a bold attempt to merge street-brawling action with role-playing elements, creating an experience that feels like a living, breathing urban adventure.
The narrative kicks off with a change of scenery for our hot-blooded protagonist. A student-only electric train has departed from the bustling Tokyo Station, making its way through the historic Kyoto Station before arriving at its final destination: Osaka. Aboard this train is a group of sophomore students from Nekketsu High School, led by none other than Kunio himself.
Kunio is exhausted from the journey, drifting into a deep sleep, only to be jolted awake by his loyal friend Hiroshi. The group is visiting the "city of laughter and defraud," Osaka, as part of a school trip. Guiding them through the unfamiliar streets is Yoshihiro, an exchange student originally from Osaka who promises to show the Tokyo boys the ropes. However, the hospitality of the local gangs is non-existent, and Kunio soon finds himself embroiled in a massive turf war. The setting of Osaka provides a distinct backdrop compared to the usual Tokyo streets, filled with unique local dialects and a tougher breed of delinquents.
River City Renegade is far more than a simple linear brawler. It incorporates significant Action-RPG elements that were quite advanced for its time. Players navigate various districts of Osaka, engaging in dialogue with NPCs and choosing when to engage in combat. The game features a leveling system where Kunio gains experience points by defeating enemies, allowing players to increase stats like Strength, Stamina, and Agility.
One of the most defining mechanics is the equipment system. Kunio can visit local shops to buy clothing, accessories, and items that provide various stat boosts or healing properties. The combat itself is visceral; Kunio can perform a variety of strikes, grapples, and finishing moves. The game also features a save system and a day/night cycle, which influences which NPCs appear and which events trigger, adding a layer of immersion rarely seen in early 90s beat 'em ups.
This game was released on several platforms, primarily focusing on the Super Famicom in the Japanese market.
While Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun was initially criticized for some technical bugs and a steep difficulty curve, it has gained a significant cult following over the decades. It is remembered for its atmospheric soundtrack and its attempt to ground the Kunio-kun universe in a more realistic setting. The RPG-lite structure influenced many future titles in the genre, including the later River City Ransom sequels and spiritual successors. For many fans, it remains the "missing link" that proved the series could handle serious storytelling alongside its trademark hard-hitting action.
