Introduction

In the golden era of the 16-bit console wars, most protagonists were muscular warriors, fast-talking animals, or brave knights. However, Visual Concepts and DTMC decided to take a drastically different path with Lester the Unlikely. Released for the Super Nintendo, this title introduced players to one of the most unconventional and, as the title suggests, unlikely heroes in gaming history. Rather than a fearless adventurer, players took control of Lester, a geeky, easily frightened teenager who would rather be reading a comic book than fighting for his life. This unique approach created a platforming experience that remains a fascinating, if polarizing, chapter in retro gaming history.

Story & Setting

The adventure begins in the urban landscape of Seaport City. Lester, a typical teenager with a passion for gaming and comic books, is walking through the city's loading docks. He is deeply engrossed in the latest issue of his favorite comic, "Super Duper Hero Squad." Exhausted from a late-night session of video games the evening before, Lester looks for a comfortable spot to rest and finish his reading. He settles onto a cargo crate, only to fall into a deep slumber.

While Lester sleeps, the crate is loaded onto a cargo ship headed for a tropical destination. When Lester eventually wakes up and realizes he is far from home, he panics and ends up on a mysterious tropical island. The setting shifts from the industrial docks of Seaport City to dangerous beaches, dense jungles, and treacherous caves. The narrative focuses entirely on Lester’s desperate attempt to survive the elements and find a way back home, transforming from a cowardly boy into someone with a modicum of courage.

Gameplay

Lester the Unlikely is a side-scrolling platformer that utilizes rotoscoped animation, a technique that gives the protagonist fluid, lifelike movements similar to games like Prince of Persia or Flashback. However, the gameplay is defined by Lester’s personality. Unlike most heroes, Lester is initially terrified of everything. When encountering a small crab or a turtle for the first time, Lester will scream and run in the opposite direction or cower in fear.
