The Brainies

The Brainies

Introduction

In the early 1990s, the puzzle genre was undergoing a significant transformation, moving from simple block-stacking exercises to complex, logic-driven challenges that tested both the mind and the reflexes. Amidst this creative boom, a charming title emerged from the French developer Loriciel: The Brainies. Known for its vibrant colors and deceptively simple premise, the game offered a unique experience that resonated with fans of tile-based strategy. Whether you know it by its primary title or its alternative name, The Tinies, this game remains a fascinating snapshot of puzzle design during the 16-bit era.

Story & Setting

Unlike many of its contemporaries that attempted to shoehorn a narrative into the puzzle experience, The Brainies keeps things elegantly abstract. The game world is a series of grid-based arenas inhabited by the titular creatures—round, wide-eyed, and colorful beings that seem to have a mind of their own. There is no looming threat or grand quest; the setting is a digital playground where logic is the only currency. The "story" is essentially the player's journey through a marathon of increasingly difficult environments, each designed to push the player's spatial reasoning to its absolute limit.

Gameplay

At its core, The Brainies is a game of management and movement. The game features a staggering 101 levels, each presenting a different configuration of obstacles and goals. The objective is straightforward: you must guide a specific number of Brainies into color-coded landing spots that match their own hue. The Brainies come in four primary colors, and organizing them efficiently is the key to success.

Control is handled via a cross-hair that the player moves across the screen. By positioning the cursor over a Brainy and pressing the fire button, you take control of its motion. Once moving, the creature will continue until it hits a wall, another Brainy, or an obstacle. Pressing fire again allows you to relinquish control, letting you switch to another creature. The challenge arises from the layout of the levels, which often require you to use other Brainies as mobile
