The Mask

The Mask

Introduction

In the mid-1990s, the world was gripped by "Mask-mania" following the massive success of the live-action film starring Jim Carrey. Capturing the manic energy, vibrant colors, and slapstick humor of the movie was no small feat, but the video game adaptation of The Mask managed to do exactly that. Released during the height of the 16-bit era, this title brought the chaotic world of Edge City to life. The game takes Stanley through several iconic locations seen in the film. The journey begins in his cramped apartment, moves through the dangerous city streets, leads into a high-stakes bank heist, continues through the eerie city park and the local jail, and finally culminates in a grand showdown at the Coco Bongo night club. Each environment is designed to reflect the noir-meets-cartoon aesthetic of the movie, filled with enemies ranging from street thugs to specialized bosses like Dorian Tyrell.

Gameplay

At its core, The Mask is a 2D action-platformer that emphasizes the protagonist's supernatural abilities. Unlike many platformers of the time where characters have limited movesets, Stanley has an arsenal of "Mojo"-powered attacks. Players must manage a
