Dragon Knight 4 stands as a significant entry in the realm of Japanese tactical role-playing games, closing out a major chapter for one of the most iconic adult-oriented franchises of the 1990s. Often known by the Roman numeral variant Dragon Knight IV, or by its regional titles such as Long Qishi 4 and 龍騎士IV, this title served as the grand finale to the saga of the legendary hero Takeru. Developed by the renowned ELF Corporation, the game successfully transitioned from its PC-98 roots to mainstream home consoles, bringing its deep narrative and strategic combat to a wider audience. While its predecessors established the foundation of the series, this fourth installment refined the formula, offering a sprawling adventure that combined high-fantasy stakes with character-driven humor and drama.
The narrative of Dragon Knight 4 picks up several years after the events of Knights of Xentar (also known as Dragon Knight III). The previous protagonist, Takeru (known as Desmond in Western localizations), has finally found peace, marrying his beloved Luna and fathering a son named Kakeru. However, the legacy of a hero is rarely quiet. Kakeru, now fifteen years old, is a spirited but somewhat misguided youth with a peculiar obsession: he has a profound weakness for naked female elves.
Despite his adolescent distractions, Kakeru is thrust into a world-ending conflict when the malevolent wizard Lushifon emerges with a terrifying plan. Lushifon seeks to petrify all of humanity, turning the populace into stone statues to ensure he can rule the world without opposition. To prevent this catastrophe, Kakeru must mature quickly. Joined by the enigmatic and skilled swordsman Eto, as well as a diverse cast of allies, Kakeru embarks on an epic quest to traverse the land, defeat Lushifon’s minions, and prove himself a worthy successor to his father’s mantle.
Unlike the traditional turn-based exploration of earlier titles, Dragon Knight 4 leans heavily into the Tactical RPG genre. Players navigate large-scale maps where positioning and unit management are paramount. The game features a robust grid-based combat system where different unit types—ranging from powerful warriors to magical casters—must be used strategically to overcome the enemy forces.
One of the most notable aspects of the console versions is the shift in content. While the original PC versions were famous for their adult themes, the releases for home systems underwent significant changes. All scenes containing nudity were removed to comply with console standards. To compensate for this, the PlayStation version received a massive visual overhaul, featuring updated character graphics and high-quality CG animations that breathed new life into the story. The gameplay balance was also tweaked, ensuring that the strategic depth remained the primary draw for players.
This game was released on several platforms, including the Super Famicom and the PlayStation.
The legacy of Dragon Knight 4 is inextricably linked to the history of the ELF Corporation, a developer that once dominated the Japanese PC gaming market. By bringing Dragon Knight IV to consoles, ELF helped bridge the gap between niche computer RPGs and the massive console gaming audience. The game is remembered as one of the better examples of how to transition a mature-rated title into an all-ages experience without losing the core identity of the characters or the complexity of the plot. It remains a cult classic among fans of 90s strategy RPGs, often praised for its ambitious scope and the memorable conclusion to Takeru's family history.
