Knights of the Round

Knights of the Round

Introduction

In the early 1990s, the arcade landscape was dominated by the rhythmic thud of punches and the clatter of swords. Capcom, the undisputed master of the side-scrolling beat 'em up, was at the height of its power. While titles like Final Fight took players to the gritty streets, Knights of the Round invited them to a world of chivalry, heavy plate armor, and ancient myths. Released in 1991, this title refined the hack-and-slash formula established in Capcom's earlier fantasy hit, The King of Dragons, adding a layer of tactical depth that set it apart from its contemporaries. Whether you were playing in a smoky arcade or on a home console, the game offered a polished, rewarding experience that turned every player into a legend of the Round Table.

Story & Setting

The game is loosely based on the Arthurian legends, specifically the quest for the Holy Grail. Players step into the boots of three iconic figures: Arthur, the aspiring King who wields the Excalibur; Lancelot, the agile and talented swordsman; and Perceval, a powerful warrior who uses a heavy axe to crush his foes. The narrative follows their journey through a war-torn Britain, as they fight to unify the land and prove their worthiness to claim the Grail. The setting is a vibrant, medieval fantasy world filled with sprawling castles, dark forests, and fortified camps, all rendered with Capcom’s signature detailed pixel art. While it doesn't strictly follow Malory’s Le Morte d'Arthur, it captures the spirit of knightly heroism perfectly.

Gameplay

Knights of the Round features seven distinct stages, each culminating in a challenging boss encounter. While the core loop involves moving from left to right and defeating generic enemies, the mechanics are surprisingly deep. Unlike many button-mashers of the era, success here relies heavily on the blocking ability. By pressing the attack button and then pulling the joystick away from the enemy, the player can parry incoming strikes. A successful block grants a few precious seconds of invincibility, allowing for a devastating counter-attack. However, players must be careful; holding a block without being hit causes the character to tire, leaving them wide open to punishment. This tactical layer is essential, as several bosses are only vulnerable immediately after their own heavy attacks have been blocked.

Like other Capcom classics, players have access to a "desperation attack" by pressing jump and attack simultaneously. This move clears the immediate area but costs a small portion of health, making it a tool of last resort. One of the most unique aspects of the game is its RPG-style leveling system. As players gain points by defeating enemies and collecting treasure, their characters level up, which is visually represented by their armor and weapons becoming more ornate and powerful as the game progresses.

Platforms

This classic hack-and-slash adventure was released on several platforms, allowing fans to enjoy the Arthurian combat both in arcades and at home on Nintendo's flagship 16-bit hardware.

Legacy

Knights of the Round remains a beloved entry in the Capcom beat 'em up library. It is often cited as one of the best examples of how to evolve the genre beyond simple combat by introducing defensive mechanics and character progression. Its influence can be seen in later weapon-based brawlers that prioritized timing over speed. The Super Nintendo port, in particular, is remembered as a technical achievement, managing to preserve much of the arcade's detail and gameplay fluidity despite the hardware limitations of the time. For many gamers, it serves as a nostalgic touchstone for the golden age of couch co-op gaming.

Fun Facts

  • While most fans know it by its arcade title, in some niche circles and database listings, it is occasionally associated with the alternative name Students of the Round: The Eternal Legend, though that title is more commonly linked to a different dungeon-crawling RPG.
  • If you manage to reach the highest level, Arthur’s armor becomes entirely golden, symbolizing his true status as the King of Britain.
  • The game allows you to cut food items found in the environment into smaller pieces, which lets multiple players share the health recovery—a rare cooperative touch for the genre.
  • The character designs for Perceval in this game influenced his look in several other Capcom-produced media for years to come.
