Resident Evil Zero
Introduction
Before the infamous incident at the Spencer Mansion, there was the Ecliptic Express. Resident Evil Zero serves as the definitive prequel to the legendary survival horror franchise, providing fans with a deeper look into the origins of the T-Virus and the downfall of the Umbrella Corporation. Originally released to showcase the graphical prowess of its era, the game captures the claustrophobic tension and dread that the series is known for. Often referred to by fans as RE0, this entry bridges the narrative gap, explaining the events that led directly into the first game while introducing unique mechanics that set it apart from its predecessors.
Story & Setting
The narrative follows Rebecca Chambers, a rookie member of the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team, who is sent to investigate a series of gruesome murders in the Arklay Mountains. After their helicopter crashes, Rebecca discovers a stalled luxury train in the middle of the woods. There, she encounters Billy Coen, an escaped convict with a mysterious past. The two are forced into an uneasy alliance to survive the nightmare. This journey takes them from the tight corridors of the Ecliptic Express to a hidden Umbrella Research Center. Known in Japan as Biohazard 0, the game explores the backstory of James Marcus, one of Umbrella's founders, and his role in creating the viral outbreaks. The atmospheric tension of Biohazard Zero remains a highlight, blending gothic architecture with scientific horror.
Gameplay
Resident Evil Zero maintains the classic third-person survival horror gameplay, featuring fixed camera angles and tank controls. However, it introduces the innovative "Partner Zapping" system. This allows players to switch between Rebecca and Billy at the touch of a button. Each character has specific strengths: Billy is more resilient and can move heavy objects, while Rebecca can mix chemicals and herbs. Puzzles often require both characters to be in different locations, working together to progress.
Another significant departure from the series norm is the removal of the iconic item boxes. Instead, players have the ability to drop items directly on the ground. These items appear on the map, allowing players to manage their inventory dynamically, though it requires careful planning to avoid leaving essential tools behind. Players will face terrifying new enemies, such as the massive mutant centipede and the humanoid Leech Men, which require strategic use of the limited ammunition and healing supplies available in RE0.
This game was released on several platforms, ranging from its original home on the Nintendo GameCube to later high-definition remasters and compilations like Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil Zero.
Legacy
While Resident Evil 0 was the last of the "classic" style games before the series underwent a massive reinvention with Resident Evil 4, its impact is still felt today. It is lauded for its stunning pre-rendered backgrounds, which are considered some of the best in the genre. Though the lack of item boxes was polarizing at the time, the game is now appreciated for its attempt to evolve the survival horror formula. It remains a crucial piece of the franchise's lore, essential for any fan wanting to understand the full scope of the Umbrella conspiracy.
