In 1943: the battle of midway for the Atari ST/STE, players are thrust into the heart of the Pacific Theater during World War II, specifically near the Midway Atoll. Their mission is to retaliate against the Japanese Air Fleet for bombing their aircraft carrier. Gamers must engage and eliminate all Japanese air and sea forces across 16 stages, ultimately confronting and destroying the Japanese battleship Yamato. Eleven of these stages involve air-to-sea combat, culminating in a boss battle against a large battleship or aircraft carrier. The remaining five stages are purely aerial battles against squadrons of Japanese bombers, including a 'Mother Bomber' that serves as the level's primary target. Players control a P-38 fighter, utilizing two buttons: one for standard attacks with various weapons, and another for special maneuvers. These maneuvers can either be a loop, reminiscent of the game 1942, or one of three unique special attacks that can damage the player's own plane. Unlike 1942, players have only a single life, albeit with a rechargeable energy bar. By destroying entire formations of red enemy planes, players earn power-ups such as health boosts or temporary special weapons that replace their default twin gun.
