Romancing SaGa 2

Romancing SaGa 2

Introduction

While many classic RPGs of the 16-bit era focused on a single group of heroes on a linear quest, Romancing SaGa 2—known in Japan as Romanshingu Sa Ga Tsū—dared to do something entirely different. Developed by Square and originally released in 1993, this title redefined what a non-linear narrative could look like. It is a sprawling epic that focuses not on one person, but on the lineage of an entire empire. As part of the larger SaGa franchise, it pushed the boundaries of player agency, forcing gamers to make difficult decisions that would echo across centuries of in-game history. Its unique blend of strategy, permadeath, and generational progression makes it one of the most sophisticated titles of its time.

Story & Setting

The game is set in the vast world of the Empire of Avalon, which is under threat from the legendary Seven Heroes. Long ago, these heroes saved the world from destruction, but they have now returned as corrupted, monstrous versions of their former selves. The narrative begins with King Leon, the ruler of Avalon, who discovers a way to pass his memories and powers down to his successors. After a tragic encounter with the Seven Heroes, Leon passes the torch to his son, Gellard.

From there, the story spans centuries. At the end of each generation, the player must choose a new successor to take the throne. This isn't just a cosmetic choice; the identity of the next Emperor or Empress depends on a combination of chance and the alliances the player has forged. By assisting different classes and races—from desert guards to mages—the player expands the pool of potential heirs, ensuring that the fight against the Seven Heroes continues until the final confrontation.
