Operation Thunderbolt

Operation Thunderbolt

Introduction

Released by Taito in 1988, Operation Thunderbolt is the high-octane sequel to the legendary Operation Wolf. While the original revolutionized the light gun genre with its intense first-person action and gritty military atmosphere, this sequel turned the dial up to eleven. Introducing simultaneous two-player action and a globe-trotting rescue mission, it quickly became a staple in arcades and home consoles alike. For fans of 80s action cinema, Operation Thunderbolt provided the perfect interactive experience, allowing players to step into the boots of elite commandos on a desperate mission against impossible odds.

Story & Setting

The narrative kicks off with a harrowing scenario: an airliner traveling from Paris to Boston has been seized by a ruthless group of terrorists. These hijackers demand the release of their incarcerated comrades, threatening the lives of every civilian on board. Instead of reaching its American destination, the plane is diverted to Kalubya, Africa, where the hostages are hidden across various fortified locations. Fearing the worst, the authorities call back the battle-hardened hero from the first game, Roy Adams. However, he isn't going in alone this time. Joined by his companion, Hardy Jones, the duo must infiltrate enemy territory, survive the harsh landscape, and bring the hostages home safely.

Gameplay

Operation Thunderbolt maintains the "on-rails" shooting style of its predecessor but adds significant variety to the loop. Across eight distinct missions, players must blast through waves of enemy soldiers, armored tanks, and attack helicopters. Unlike many shooters of the era, the gameplay isn't strictly foot-based. Several stages see the protagonists manning a jeep or navigating a boat, which changes the pace and visual perspective of the combat.

Resource management is critical to survival. Players have a limited supply of ammunition and powerful rocket bombs. While spraying bullets is tempting, precision is rewarded. Supplies can be replenished by shooting crates that parachute into the battlefield or are found scattered in the environment. In a quirky and somewhat controversial mechanic, even shooting the stray cats or dogs that wander through the line of fire can yield necessary power-ups or ammunition. Aside from basic ammo, players can find bulletproof vests and specialized weapons. Protecting hostages is also paramount; shooting a civilian results in a penalty, making the chaotic firefights a test of both reflexes and restraint.

Platforms

This game was released on several platforms, including the Atari ST, Commodore 64, and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Legacy

Operation Thunderbolt is remembered as a successful evolution of a genre-defining title. By adding cooperative play, Taito addressed the biggest limitation of the original Operation Wolf, turning the experience into a social event. It paved the way for future light gun classics like Virtua Cop and Time Crisis by proving that mission variety and resource management could enhance the simple "point and shoot" loop. The home ports, particularly on the SNES, were well-received for their ability to translate the frantic arcade energy to a controller or specialized peripherals like the Super Scope.

Fun Facts

  • The plot of the game is loosely inspired by real-world events, specifically the 1976 hijacking of an Air France flight that led to the famous "Operation Entebbe."
  • While the arcade version featured heavy cabinet-mounted machine guns that vibrated when fired to simulate recoil, home players had to rely on standard gamepads or light guns.
  • The decision to allow players to shoot animals for supplies is often cited as one of the more bizarre design choices of the 80s, a testament to the "anything goes" era of arcade development.
  • The game features multiple endings depending on how many hostages the player manages to successfully rescue by the end of the eighth mission.
