Obitus

Obitus

Introduction

In the early 1990s, the role-playing genre was undergoing a period of intense experimentation as developers sought to push the technical boundaries of home computers and consoles. Among the most ambitious titles of this era was Obitus, a unique blend of first-person dungeon crawling and side-scrolling action. While many of its contemporaries adhered strictly to the grid-based movement patterns established by classics like Dungeon Master, Obitus attempted to bridge the gap between traditional RPG mechanics and a more fluid, immersive visual experience. It remains a fascinating example of how developers tried to simulate 3D environments before the industry fully transitioned to polygon-based graphics.

Story & Setting

The narrative of Obitus follows the plight of Wilbert, a humble history teacher who finds himself caught in a literal and metaphorical storm. While driving through Snowdonia, Wilbert is transported to a mysterious and hostile realm known as Middle-earth (unrelated to J.R.R. Tolkien’s universe). This land is a dark fantasy world filled with dense forests, treacherous marshes, and labyrinthine castles. To find his way back to his own reality, Wilbert must navigate this strange world, recover four mystical gems, and ultimately defeat the dark forces controlling the land. The setting is atmospheric and often oppressive, emphasizing the protagonist's status as an outsider in a world that wants him gone.

Gameplay

The most striking feature of Obitus is its innovative first-person exploration. While titles like Eye of the Beholder limited players to four cardinal directions with sudden frame jumps, Obitus implemented an eight-directional system. As the player turns, the view scrolls smoothly, providing a sense of physical presence and continuity that was rare for its time. This smooth scrolling continues when moving forward, creating a primitive but effective 3D sensation that made navigating the wilderness feel organic.

However, exploration is only one half of the experience. The game frequently transitions into action-oriented sequences. When encountering certain areas or enemies, the perspective shifts to a horizontal side-scrolling view. Here, the player must use agility and reflexes to fight off enemies using a bow while dodging incoming projectiles. Later in the journey, the game introduces castle exploration which utilizes a four-directional movement system, adding further variety to the structural loop. Players must also manage survival elements, such as hunger and fatigue, making resource management just as vital as combat prowess.

Platforms

This game was released on several platforms, including the Atari ST and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Legacy

Obitus is remembered today primarily for its technical ambition. It was published by Psygnosis, a company renowned for pushing the graphical capabilities of hardware, and the game’s smooth-scrolling engine was a testament to that reputation. While some critics at the time found the combination of genres jarring and the difficulty curve steep, others praised its atmosphere and the fluidity of its first-person engine. It stands as a bridge between the static dungeon crawlers of the 80s and the free-roaming RPGs that would arrive later in the 90s. Though it didn't spawn a long-running franchise, it remains a cult classic for those who appreciate the creative risks taken during the 16-bit era.
