Introduction

In the twilight years of the Super Famicom, Nintendo released a title that would become a legendary cult classic among puzzle enthusiasts. Known as Sutte Hakkun (or すってはっくん in its native Japan), this game is a masterclass in minimalist design and deep logic. Combining the precision of a platformer with the brain-teasing complexity of a puzzle game, it eschews traditional combat in favor of interaction with the environment. Originally born on the Satellaview peripheral, its unique charm and clever mechanics eventually earned it a full retail release, solidifying its place as one of the most innovative titles of the 16-bit era.

Story & Setting

The narrative of Sutte Hakkun is as whimsical and colorful as its visual style. The game is set across the Peaceful Islands, a tranquil archipelago where the sky was once graced by the magnificent Rainbow of Happiness. One day, this symbol of peace shatters into numerous shards, which are scattered across the islands. Without the rainbow, the harmony of the world is at risk. Enter Hakkun, a round, flightless bird with a very large, versatile beak. Hakkun takes it upon himself to traverse the islands, track down the missing rainbow crystals, and piece the sky back together. The setting is vibrant and serene, reinforcing the game's focus on logic and exploration rather than conflict.

Gameplay

Sutte Hakkun is a puzzle-action platformer where the core mechanics revolve around the titular actions: "sutte" (sucking) and "hakkun" (spitting or releasing). Hakkun cannot fly, but he can jump and walk. To navigate the levels, players must interact with two primary elements: transparent blocks and colored potions.

Hakkun can use his beak to swallow blocks and move them to different locations, effectively reshaping the level to overcome obstacles. However, the true complexity lies in the potions. By sucking different colored fluids from jars, Hakkun can inject them into blocks to give them unique properties. A red potion makes a block move vertically, a blue potion moves it horizontally, and a yellow potion makes it move diagonally. Combining these colors or alternating them is essential to reaching the rainbow shards hidden in each stage.

Adding to the challenge is a unique scoring system. Unlike games that reward speed, Sutte Hakkun rewards efficiency. Players begin each level with a set number of points, and every move Hakkun makes—every jump, every suck, and every spit—decreases that total. This forces players to plan their route meticulously to finish with the highest score possible. With no enemies to fight and no time limits to worry about, the difficulty stems entirely from the player’s ability to solve the environmental riddles.

Platforms

This game was released on several platforms, primarily focusing on the Japanese market across various generations of Nintendo hardware.

Legacy

Sutte Hakkun is famously associated with the Satellaview, a satellite modem peripheral for the Super Famicom. While it started as a series of digital broadcasts, its popularity led to a expanded release via the Nintendo Power flash cartridge service. This version was significant because it included all the levels the creators intended to include—a feat that wasn't possible on the 8MB Satellaview Memory Pak. Eventually, it saw a standard cartridge release and later found a new audience on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console. Today, it is remembered as a "hidden gem" and a prime example of Nintendo's ingenuity in the puzzle genre.
