Among the franchise's storied history, Ys IV: Mask of the Sun occupies a fascinating space. The narrative begins shortly after Adol Christin has secured his place in legend by defeating the ultimate evil in his previous adventure. As the great hero stands upon a peaceful sea shore, the wind blowing through his signature red hair, he reflects on the fate of the utopian land of Ys. His contemplation is interrupted when he notices a bottle that has washed onto the shore. Inside, he discovers a letter written in a foreign language.
The message is a plea from an unknown sender, begging the hero to travel to their distant land to save it from a mysterious and gathering evil. Driven by his unquenchable thirst for adventure and his innate desire to help those in need, Adol accepts the summons. This journey leads him to the Great Forest of Celceta, a vast and dangerous wilderness filled with ancient ruins and hidden secrets that challenge Adol's strength and resolve.
Ys IV: Mask of the Sun utilizes the classic "bump combat" system that defined the early era of the series. Rather than using a dedicated attack button, players must navigate Adol directly into his foes. However, there is a significant tactical layer to this mechanic: an enemy should be rammed from the sides or the rear to inflict damage. If the player attempts a head-on collision or performs the maneuver incorrectly, Adol will take damage himself. This system encourages high-speed movement and precise positioning.
Beyond physical combat, players can harness the power of magic to turn the tide of battle. Success requires the player to position themselves strategically, ensuring that they can strike while remaining out of the enemy's line of retaliation. While Tonkin House developed Mask of the Sun, another studio, Hudson Soft, developed a different game called The Dawn of Ys for the PC Engine. Because both games were based on the same general story outline provided by Nihon Falcom, they share plot points but differ wildly in level design, music, and mechanics. For many years, Mask of the Sun was considered the "official" canon version of the story by Falcom, until the company eventually developed their own definitive version, Ys: Memories of Celceta, years later. Despite this, Mask of the Sun remains a beloved classic for Super Famicom enthusiasts.
