Castlevania: Dracula X is a fascinating and often debated chapter in the long-running Konami franchise. Known in Japan as Akumajou Dracula XX and in Europe as Castlevania: Vampire's Kiss, this title was released during the twilight years of the 16-bit era. It serves as a reimagining of the legendary PC Engine title, Rondo of Blood, bringing the high-stakes action of Richter Belmont’s journey to the Super Nintendo. While it shares the same protagonist and general theme as its predecessor, it features entirely redesigned levels and its own unique identity. For many fans, it remains one of the most challenging and atmospheric entries in the entire vampire-hunting saga.
The legend returns as the dark count awakens from his century-long slumber. Rising up from his eternal sleep, Count Dracula is back again to battle the descendants of the great vampire-stalking Belmont family. This time, the burden falls upon Richter Belmont. Dracula has not returned alone; he has summoned his most powerful dark minions—Cerberus, Minaurus, and the Salamander—to bring a reign of terror upon the land and protect his stronghold.
Richter’s quest is personal. The dark lord has kidnapped his beloved Annet and her sister Maria, holding them captive within the shifting walls of Castlevania. The narrative takes players through a cursed Transylvanian landscape filled with gothic architecture and supernatural dread. Depending on the choices you make and the secrets you uncover, the story can branch into different paths, leading to multiple endings that determine the ultimate fate of the Belmont lineage and those Richter holds dear.
At its core, Castlevania: Dracula X (also referred to by fans as Devil's Castle Dracula XX) is a classic side-scrolling action-platformer that demands precision and patience. Players control Richter, whose primary weapon is the iconic Vampire Killer whip. The game consists of seven primary stages, but the progression is far from linear. The multi-ending, multi-story feature takes you through many levels of adventure, with hidden paths that can only be accessed by performing specific actions, such as falling into certain pits or finding hidden keys.
Strategically using magical tomes and sub-weapons is vital for survival. Richter can perform "Item Crashes," which are titanic weapons of power that consume a high number of hearts to deal massive damage to the screen. Mastering these moves is essential for defeating the horrifying bosses that guard the end of each stage. Players must also discover secret bonus levels to achieve the "best" ending, which requires rescuing both Annet and Maria. The platforming is notoriously difficult, featuring some of the most punishing enemy placements and environmental hazards in the series.
This game was released on several platforms, including the original Super Nintendo and later digital services for newer handhelds and consoles.
The legacy of Castlevania: Dracula X is one of artistic achievement and polarizing gameplay. Because it was released after Super Castlevania IV, many players expected a similar control style, but Dracula X returned to a more rigid, traditional movement system that prioritized careful positioning. Over time, the game has been reappraised by the community. While it was once overshadowed by Rondo of Blood, fans now celebrate its incredible 16-bit soundtrack—often considered one of the best on the SNES—and its vibrant, detailed sprite work. It remains a staple of Castlevania collections, reminding players of an era where difficulty was a badge of honor and gothic atmosphere was king.
