The early 1990s represented a volatile yet creative explosion in the comic book industry. While giants like Marvel and DC dominated the landscape, independent publishers sought to carve out their own niches. Malibu Comics was one such contender, launching their ambitious "Ultraverse" line of superheroes. At the forefront of this new universe was Prime, a character that blended the wish-fulfillment of Shazam with the visceral body horror of 90s aesthetics. To capitalize on the character's popularity, Malibu Interactive began development on a video game adaptation titled Prime for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

Despite reaching an advanced stage of development, the game ultimately joined the ranks of the era's most famous "lost" titles. It was designed to be a flagship title for Malibu’s interactive division, intended to showcase the power of the 16-bit hardware while translating the gritty, high-octane energy of the comics into a digital format. Story & Setting

The narrative of Prime follows the unique and somewhat unsettling origin of Kevin Green, a thirteen-year-old boy who possesses a strange and powerful ability. Unlike other heroes who might wear a suit or transform through magic, Kevin’s body secretes a thick, bio-organic sludge that hardens into the form of a massive, hyper-muscular adult superhero. This "Prime" body is not a separate entity but a living shell that Kevin inhabits, possessing incredible strength, flight, and invulnerability.

The game is set within the Ultraverse, a world where "Ultras" (beings with superpowers) are a relatively new phenomenon. Players would have followed Kevin as he navigated the complexities of being a teenager trapped inside the body of a god-like warrior, battling various villains from the comic series. The setting promised to capture the urban, slightly darker tone of the Malibu source material, moving through cityscapes and secret laboratories that defined the Ultraverse's aesthetic.

Gameplay

In terms of mechanics, Prime was developed as a classic 2D side-scrolling beat 'em up, a genre that was immensely popular on the Super Nintendo. Players would control the titular hero as he moved through various levels, dispatching waves of enemies using his superhuman physique. Unlike more grounded brawlers, Prime integrated the hero's flight capabilities, allowing for vertical movement and aerial combat that set it apart from standard street-fighting games.
