The King of Dragons

The King of Dragons

Introduction

During the early 1990s, Capcom reigned supreme in the arcade scene, delivering some of the most iconic beat 'em ups in gaming history. While many of their titles focused on gritty urban brawls, The King of Dragons took a different path, transporting players into a high-fantasy world filled with mythical beasts and legendary heroes. Originally released in arcades in 1991, the game was later ported to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), bringing the magic of cooperative dragon-slaying into the living room. It remains a standout title for fans of side-scrolling action who crave a touch of role-playing depth alongside their hack-and-slash gameplay.

Story & Setting

The narrative of The King of Dragons is a classic tale of high fantasy. The kingdom of Malus has fallen under the shadow of a great evil: the red dragon Gildiss has awakened from a long slumber, bringing with him an army of monsters to terrorize the land. From the murky depths of swamps to the frozen peaks of mountains, the world is overrun by orcs, lizardmen, harpies, and cyclopes. Players step into the boots of one of five courageous adventurers who have sworn to journey through sixteen perilous stages to reach the dragon’s lair. The setting is rich with atmosphere, drawing heavy inspiration from tabletop fantasy tropes and medieval mythology to create a cohesive and engaging world.

Gameplay

The King of Dragons distinguishes itself from other brawlers of its era by incorporating light RPG elements. As players defeat enemies, they earn experience points that allow their characters to level up, increasing their maximum health and overall power. Throughout the journey, players also discover treasure chests containing weapon and shield upgrades, which change the character's sprite and combat effectiveness.

The game features five playable classes: the balanced Fighter, the defensive Cleric, the powerful Wizard, the agile Elf, and the sturdy Dwarf. Each class offers a unique strategic approach to combat. The SNES port, while faithful to the arcade original, introduced several specific changes. Most notably, the number of simultaneous players was reduced from three down to two. To maintain performance on home hardware, the in-game sprites were moderately reduced in size. However, the port added a significant gameplay improvement: the ability to assign the magic attack and shield defense to different buttons. This provided players with much more control over their defensive maneuvers compared to the arcade version’s more restricted input methods.

Platforms

This game was released on several platforms, including the Super Famicom in Japan and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in North America and Europe.

Legacy

The King of Dragons is remembered as a pivotal title in Capcom’s evolution. It served as a spiritual precursor to their later licensed Dungeons & Dragons arcade titles, such as Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara. By successfully blending the "belt-scrolling" action of a beat 'em up with character progression and distinct classes, it paved the way for the modern action-RPG genre. The SNES port is frequently praised for its high-quality sound design and for being one of the best arcade-to-home transitions of the 16-bit era, retaining the spirit of the original despite technical limitations.

Fun Facts

  • The game’s soundtrack was composed by Yoko Shimomura, who would later gain worldwide fame for her work on Street Fighter II and the Kingdom Hearts series.
  • While the arcade version required players to tilt the joystick away from enemies to block, the SNES port’s customizable buttons made the shield much more intuitive to use.
  • Despite the length of the quest—spanning 16 different stages—many of the levels are quite short, designed to keep the pace of the arcade experience fast and frantic.
  • Each of the five heroes has a different range and jump height, meaning the strategy for defeating bosses changes significantly depending on which character you choose.
