Popeye

Popeye: Ijiwaru Majo Seahag no Maki

Introduction

When gamers think of the world's most famous spinach-eating sailor, they often recall the classic 1982 arcade hit. However, the Super Famicom era brought a unique and experimental title to the franchise that many Western fans missed. Released in 1994, Popeye: Ijiwaru Majo Seahag no Maki—also known by its English translation, Popeye: The Tale of Seahag the Wicked Witch—is a fascinating departure from standard platforming. Developed by Technōs Japan, the same minds behind Double Dragon and River City Ransom, this game blends traditional side-scrolling action with the strategic elements of a board game, creating a hybrid experience that stands out in the 16-bit library.

Story & Setting

The narrative follows the titular hero as he faces off against one of his most persistent and magical foes: the Sea Hag. In this adventure, the Sea Hag has cast a wicked curse upon Popeye’s friends, including Olive Oyl, Bluto, and Wimpy, turning them into frozen statues. To break the spell, Popeye must traverse various islands and recover the shattered pieces of their hearts. The setting captures the whimsical yet slightly gritty atmosphere of the original E.C. Segar comic strips, moving through docks, jungles, and mystical realms. As players progress, they aren't just fighting for survival; they are on a quest to restore the emotions and lives of those the Seahag has sought to destroy.

Gameplay

The core of the game is divided into two distinct styles of play. Each level, or "stage," begins on a large, sprawling level map designed like a board game. At the start of a stage, the game reveals which friend needs saving. Their heart then rises into the sky and shatters into several pieces, which scatter across random spaces on the map.

To move, the player presses the action button to trigger a wheel numbered 1 through 6. This determines how many spaces Popeye advances during his turn. The map is filled with various spaces that serve different purposes—some may grant items, while others trigger side-scrolling action sequences. When Popeye lands on a space containing a heart piece or an enemy encounter, the game shifts into a traditional side-scroller. In these segments, Popeye must use his signature punches to defeat Popeye villains and mini-bosses. Only after collecting all the heart pieces and defeating the guardian of the stage can the player move closer to the final showdown with the Seahag.

Platforms

This game was primarily released for the Nintendo 16-bit ecosystem, seeing a release in Japan and a specific regional release in South America.

  • SUPER FAMICOM: NTSC-J
  • SUPER NINTENDO ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM: NTSC-U

Legacy

While Popeye: Ijiwaru Majo Seahag no Maki didn't achieve the global fame of its arcade predecessor, it remains a cult classic for collectors and fans of Technōs Japan. It is often praised for its high-quality sprite work and its innovative attempt to mix genres before the "party game" genre became a staple of the industry. Its rarity in English-speaking markets has made it a popular target for fan translations, allowing a new generation to appreciate its unique charm. The game serves as a testament to a time when developers were willing to take risks with established licenses, moving beyond simple licensed platformers to create something more complex and engaging.

Fun Facts

  • Regional Differences: Although the game had a cancelled release in North America, it was eventually released in Brazil by Tectoy under the simplified title Popeye.
  • The Hidden Title: In many regions, the game is simply referred to as Popeye, though its full Japanese title explicitly references the Sea Hag (Ijiwaru Majo Seahag).
  • Technōs Touch: Despite being a Popeye game, the combat mechanics feel refined and punchy, a signature style of the developers behind Kunio-kun.
  • Board Game RNG: The random scattering of heart pieces means that no two playthroughs of a stage are exactly the same, adding a layer of replayability rarely seen in SNES action games.
