In the pantheon of 16-bit platforming heroes, few possess a skull as thick or a spirit as resilient as Bonk. Known in Japan as Super Genjin 2 (and often referred to by fans as Super Bonk 2 or Chou Genjin 2), this title serves as a high-water mark for the series on the Super Famicom. Released during the tail end of the console's lifecycle, the game refined the prehistoric platforming mechanics that made the PC Engine original a cult classic. With its vibrant colors, quirky humor, and expanded move set, Super Genjin 2 remains a definitive example of the genre, offering a polished experience that rewards both precision and curiosity.
Returning to the prehistoric era, the narrative once again centers on the eternal struggle between our hard-headed hero and the persistent Reptilian King. Despite being defeated four times in previous adventures, the king returns with a renewed ambition to conquer the world. This time, however, he hasn't come alone. He has enlisted the help of his five most elite soldiers, a group of formidable bosses tasked with stopping Bonk in his tracks. The setting takes players through a variety of imaginative prehistoric landscapes, blending natural wilderness with the bizarre, technologically advanced strongholds of the reptilian army.
At its core, Super Genjin 2 is a sidescrolling action-platformer that emphasizes the use of Bonk’s massive head as his primary tool. He can attack enemies from above, below, while swimming, or even mid-air. The controls are remarkably smooth, allowing for a level of maneuverability that surpasses its predecessors. Classic moves return, such as climbing walls with his teeth, scaling waterfalls, and bouncing off walls. A standout mechanic is the ability to skip across the surface of water like a stone, provided Bonk's head is facing downward.
New to this entry is the inclusion of a dedicated run button (A button) and a special ability button (X button). The health system is also expanded; while you start with a standard health bar, finding translucent heart icons will permanently increase your capacity. Food acts as both a score multiplier and a healing item.
Transformation remains the series' hallmark. By consuming meat or specific power-up icons, Bonk can morph into various forms. These include a
