Hebereke's Popoon

Hebereke's Popoon

Introduction

The Hebereke series (known as Ufouria: The Saga in some Western territories) is celebrated for its quirky humor and surreal character designs. Hebereke's Popoon, also known by the titles Hebereke no Popuun or Hebereke no Popoon, is a puzzle spin-off that successfully captures the franchise's eccentric charm. Stepping away from the metroidvania style of the original title, this game focuses on fast-paced, addictive block-matching action. It stands as a testament to Sunsoft's ability to create mechanically sound puzzle games that don't sacrifice personality for gameplay.

Story & Setting

The game is set in the colorful and bizarre world of the Hebereke universe. While the narrative is secondary to the competitive puzzle action, the "story" follows the protagonist Hebereke as he encounters various friends and rivals in a series of head-to-head matches. The setting is vibrant and filled with the surrealist art style that Sunsoft became famous for during the 16-bit era. Characters like the cat-suit-wearing girl Oh-Chan, the ghost Sukezaemon, and the anglerfish Jennifer bring a unique energy to the screen, making every encounter feel like a playful confrontation within their strange, dream-like realm.

Gameplay

Hebereke's Popoon is a block-grouping puzzle game that shares more DNA with Dr. Mario than Tetris. Players must arrange falling pairs of "Popoons"—blobs of different colors—to create groups of four or more of the same color. Once a group is formed, it disappears, potentially triggering chain reactions that send "junk" blocks to the opponent's field.

The single-player mode features a unique progression system. Initially, you are forced to play as the titular Hebereke in a match against Oh-Chan. Once she is defeated, she becomes a playable option for the next match against Sukezaemon. This loop continues until you have defeated and "unlocked" all eight characters. Each match in this mode consists of a single round, though a defeated player can use a continue to jump back into the action.

In contrast, the two-player mode opens up the full roster of eight characters immediately. Matches here are decided in a best-of-three format, allowing for more intense competitive sessions. A standout feature is the handicap system, which ranges from levels 1 to 5. This allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly by adjusting the difficulty of their specific board. Furthermore, each character possesses distinct special abilities that can be used to disrupt the opponent's screen, adding a layer of character-specific strategy to the color-matching frenzy.

Platforms

This game was released on several platforms, including the Super Famicom in Japan and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in PAL regions.

Legacy

Hebereke's Popoon is remembered as one of the quintessential "falling block" clones that managed to carve out its own identity during the puzzle craze of the 1990s. It helped solidify the Hebereke franchise as a versatile IP for Sunsoft, proving the characters could thrive outside of side-scrolling adventures. In Europe, where the original game was released as Ufouria, the branding of this puzzle game was somewhat confusing to gamers at the time, yet it gained a cult following due to its high-quality music and tight controls. It remains a favorite for retro puzzle enthusiasts and those who appreciate the "Kimo-kawaii" (gross-cute) aesthetic of classic Japanese gaming.

Fun Facts

  • Despite the series' popularity in Japan, many of the Hebereke spin-offs never received a North American release.
  • Each character's special attack is visually unique and often surreal, such as Sukezaemon literally throwing his head at the opponent's field.
  • The game features a highly energetic soundtrack composed by the Sunsoft audio team, who were legendary for pushing the sound chips of 16-bit consoles to their limits.
