Ghoul Patrol

Ghoul Patrol

Introduction

In the mid-1990s, the 16-bit era was defined by vibrant colors, experimental gameplay, and the rise of cult classics. Among the most cherished titles was Zombies Ate My Neighbors, a frantic, humorous tribute to horror B-movies. Its direct successor, Ghoul Patrol, arrived in 1994 to continue the monster-mashing adventures of the teenage duo Zeke and Julie. Developed by Motion Pixel and published by LucasArts, the game took the established top-down run-and-gun formula and injected it with new mechanics, diverse settings, and even more supernatural threats. While it stepped out of the shadow of its predecessor, it carved out its own unique identity as a challenging and atmospheric action game that remains a nostalgic favorite for retro enthusiasts.

Story & Setting

Unlike the neighborhood-centric chaos of the first game, Ghoul Patrol begins its narrative in a local library exhibit. Our returning protagonists, the spikey-haired Zeke and the cool-headed Julie, are spending their time looking at a spooky historical display when they inadvertently stumble upon an ancient, cursed book. Their curiosity gets the better of them, and upon opening the tome, they accidentally unleash a malevolent demon—the lord of skeletons, ghouls, and ghosts.

This ancient evil doesn't just haunt the library; it begins to pull the entire world into a nightmare dimension. The setting is much more expansive than the previous entry, taking players through five distinct time periods and locations. Zeke and Julie must travel through a haunted metropolis, a spooky pirate ship, a creepy carnival, and even Feudal Japan. Each environment is teeming with thematic monsters that serve the demon lord, forcing the kids to step up once again as the world's unlikely saviors.

Gameplay

At its core, Ghoul Patrol retains the rescue-based loop that made the original so addictive. On each level, your primary objective is to locate and rescue ten trapped victims before the various monsters can get to them. These victims range from helpless tourists and librarians to cheering cheerleaders. If a monster touches a victim before you do, they are lost; however, the level only ends once all remaining survivors are secured and the exit appears. Each world culminates in a massive, screen-filling boss fight that requires pattern recognition and quick reflexes to overcome.

One of the biggest evolutions in gameplay is the movement. Zeke and Julie are more mobile than ever, gaining the ability to jump over obstacles and slide to avoid enemy fire. The arsenal of super-new weapons has also seen an upgrade. Players can find power-ups like the Plasma Gun, which tears through spectral entities, and the Lobbing Smash Gun, perfect for hitting enemies behind cover. However, survival isn't just about firepower; resource management is crucial. Ammo is strictly limited, and players must carefully search every nook and cranny for refills and health items.
