In the mid-1990s, the side-scrolling beat 'em up genre was at the height of its popularity, and few licenses were as lucrative as Marvel’s Web-Slinger. Released as a follow-up to the cult classic Maximum Carnage, the 1995 title Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety brought two of Marvel's most iconic characters back to the 16-bit arena. Also known by alternative names such as Spider-Man & Venom: Separation Anxiety or simply Separation Anxiety, this title sought to capitalize on the popularity of the "Lethal Protector" era of Venom. Unlike its predecessor, which focused heavily on a linear narrative, this installment leaned into pure arcade-style action, offering players the chance to team up and clear the streets of symbiote-infused threats.
The narrative of the game is loosely inspired by the Venom: Separation Anxiety comic book miniseries. The plot centers on the nefarious Life Foundation, a shadowy organization that has managed to capture Venom and forcibly extract five seeds from his symbiote. These seeds are grown into five distinct, deadly symbiotes: Phage, Lasher, Riot, Scream, and Agony. The Foundation's goal is to bond these creatures with their own security soldiers to create an unstoppable superhuman army.
Spider-Man, ever the hero, steps in to prevent this global threat from coming to fruition. Meanwhile, Eddie Brock—recovering from his wounds and fueled by a sense of personal violation—realizes he must hunt down his "offspring" and destroy them. This creates an uneasy alliance between the wall-crawler and his on-and-off-again foe. The journey takes players through a variety of gritty environments, from urban city streets and dense woods to high-tech underground complexes and secret laboratories.
At its core, Venom/Spider-Man: Separation Anxiety is a traditional brawler that emphasizes crowd control and heavy-hitting combos. Players can choose to control either Spider-Man or Venom, each possessing a distinct feel. Spider-Man is the more agile of the two, utilizing quick strikes and acrobatic maneuvers, while Venom relies on brute strength and devastating power moves to overwhelm his enemies.
The game mechanics allow for punching, kicking, and swinging across the screen to maintain momentum. One of the most significant additions compared to earlier titles is the "Hero Icon" system. Throughout the levels, players can collect specific icons that allow them to summon help from Spider-Man’s greatest allies. These cameos include heavy hitters like Captain America, Ghost Rider, Daredevil, and Hawkeye, each providing a screen-clearing special attack or temporary assistance that can turn the tide of a difficult boss encounter.
This game was released on the primary 16-bit consoles of the era, bringing high-energy superhero action to living rooms across the globe.
While Separation Anxiety is often compared to its predecessor, Maximum Carnage, it holds a unique place in the history of Marvel video games. It was praised at the time for including the one feature fans wanted most in the previous game: two-player simultaneous cooperative play. Being able to have Spider-Man and Venom on screen at the same time was a dream come true for many comic book fans.
However, the game opted for a more stripped-back presentation, removing the comic-book-style cutscenes that made the first game so memorable. Despite this, its focus on pure gameplay and the inclusion of the Life Foundation symbiotes has made it a nostalgic favorite for those who grew up during the 90s superhero boom. It remains a staple example of the "beat 'em up" era of licensed gaming.
