Aaahh!!! Real Monsters

Aaahh!!! Real Monsters

Introduction

In the mid-1990s, Nickelodeon was the king of quirky, slightly grotesque, and immensely creative animation. Among its "Nicktoons" lineup, few shows were as distinctively weird as Aaahh!!! Real Monsters. The show’s transition to the video game world allowed players to inhabit the slime-covered lives of its protagonists. Often recognized by its expanded title, Nickelodeon: AAAHH!!! Real Monsters, the game sought to capture the show’s unique visual style and dark humor. It stands as a quintessential 16-bit era platformer that combined character-switching mechanics with the gross-out charm that defined a generation of children's television.

Story & Setting

The game stays remarkably faithful to the source material, placing players in the roles of the iconic trio: Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm. They are students at the Monster Academy, an institution hidden beneath a city dump where they learn the fine art of scaring humans. The narrative kicks off when the formidable headmaster, The Gromble, announces the arrival of the monsters' Midterm Exam. To pass this grueling test and prove they are truly frightening, the trio must venture out of the sewers and into the human world. Their mission is to perform various tasks assigned by The Gromble, which primarily involve terrorizing the "top-side" residents and collecting various pieces of trash to prove their success.

Gameplay

Aaahh!!! Real Monsters is a side-scrolling platformer that emphasizes teamwork and environmental interaction. Players can switch between Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm at any time, which is essential because each monster possesses unique abilities necessary for progression. Ickis is the most agile, capable of gliding through the air using his large ears. Oblina can reach higher ledges due to her tall, slender shape and can also shapeshift to perform specific scares. Krumm, perhaps the strangest of the bunch, uses his detachable eyes to scout ahead and can utilize a pungent "stink cloud" attack.

Beyond individual moves, the game features a "Triple Threat" mechanic where the three monsters stack on top of one another to reach high areas or perform a massive "Team Scare." The core loop involves navigating hazardous levels filled with traps and hostile humans. Players must collect trash—which serves as both a score mechanic and a resource—and use "garbage ammo" to pelt enemies. The ultimate goal in many levels is to locate a specific human target and perform a successful scare to fulfill the Midterm requirements.

Platforms

This game was released on several platforms, including the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Legacy

While Aaahh!!! Real Monsters was one of many licensed platformers during the 90s, it is remembered fondly for its high-quality animation and faithfulness to the cartoon's aesthetic. Developed by Realtime Associates, the game managed to replicate the jagged, grimy look of the show using the limited palettes of the 16-bit consoles. While critics at the time found the difficulty curve somewhat steep, the game remains a nostalgic touchstone for fans of the Nicktoons era. It represents a time when licensed games were experimental with their mechanics, moving beyond simple run-and-gun gameplay to incorporate puzzle-solving and character-swapping elements.

Fun Facts

  • Despite being a game about monsters, the primary antagonists are often regular humans or household pets that find the trio more annoying than terrifying.
  • The SNES and Genesis versions are largely identical in content, though the SNES version is often praised for its superior sound samples, capturing the squelching and groaning sound effects of the show more accurately.
  • Krumm's ability to throw his eyes is a direct reference to the show's lore, where he famously has to hold his eyeballs in his hands because he has no eye sockets.
  • The game features a cameo from The Snorch, the silent, disciplined disciplinarian from the Academy, who helps The Gromble monitor the students' progress.
