When most gamers think of movie tie-ins from the 16-bit era, they often expect standard side-scrolling platformers. However, Addams Family Values, released in 1995 by Ocean Software, bucked this trend by delivering a surprisingly deep action-adventure experience. Taking inspiration from the 1993 film of the same name, the game shifts the focus from Gomez to the eccentric Uncle Fester. With its top-down perspective and emphasis on exploration, puzzle-solving, and item management, it remains a unique entry in the library of licensed titles, often drawing favorable comparisons to classic adventure franchises like The Legend of Zelda.
The narrative follows the dark and whimsical plot of the feature film. Baby Pubert, the latest and most moustachioed addition to the Addams clan, has been abducted by the gold-digging nanny Debbie Jellinski. While the rest of the family is preoccupied, it falls upon Uncle Fester to venture out and bring the child home safely.
The game is set in and around the sprawling, macabre grounds of the Addams mansion. Players must navigate a variety of atmospheric locales, including haunted forests, murky swamps, and treacherous stone gardens. The world is filled with the signature gothic charm of the franchise, blending horror elements with the tongue-in-cheek humor that fans have come to love. As Fester searches for clues regarding Pubert’s whereabouts, he must brave environments teeming with supernatural threats and environmental hazards.
Addams Family Values is an action-RPG that emphasizes exploration across seven expansive levels. As Uncle Fester, your primary mode of defense is his signature lightning attack, known as the "Zzap." However, as the game progresses, you must find various items to overcome increasingly difficult obstacles and bosses. Fester isn't alone in his quest; he frequently encounters other family members like Gomez, Morticia, and Lurch, who provide vital advice and key items required for progression.
The item system is central to the gameplay. You will collect objects such as a box of seeds, which grow into mini-bushes that attack enemies, and stone marbles used to petrify attackers. The bowling ball serves a dual purpose, acting as a heavy projectile and a tool to break through cracked walls. One of the most unique mechanics involves "black beetle cookies." In any other game, these might be a penalty, but for an Addams, a dose of ill-health is exactly what Fester needs to restore his hit points. Additionally, finding batteries is essential, as they power up the Zzap attack to deal more damage to the ghosts, ghouls, gargoyles, and vultures that roam the grounds.
This game was released on several platforms, including the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis.
While it didn't achieve the same commercial ubiquity as some other licensed titles of the 90s, Addams Family Values has aged remarkably well. It is often cited as a "hidden gem" for the SNES and Mega Drive due to its non-linear exploration and challenging puzzles. Unlike the first Addams Family game, which was a traditional platformer, Values is remembered for its atmospheric world-building and its commitment to the RPG-lite genre. For many retro gaming enthusiasts, it represents a high point for Ocean Software, demonstrating how to properly adapt a cinematic license into a compelling, mechanically sound video game.
