When gamers discuss the pinnacle of 16-bit shoot 'em ups, one name frequently rises to the top: R-Type III: The Third Lightning. Released during the golden age of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, this title, also known simply as R-Type 3 or by its Japanese title Āru Taipu Surī: Za Sādo Raitoningu, represents a masterclass in side-scrolling action. Unlike its predecessors, which were born in the arcades before being ported to home consoles, this third installment was built from the ground up to push the Super Nintendo's hardware to its absolute limits. It remains a beloved entry in the Irem library, known for its intense difficulty, imaginative bio-mechanical art style, and innovative weaponry.
The narrative follows the series' long-standing conflict against the Bydo Empire, a race of grotesque, bio-mechanical monstrosities that threaten all of humanity. In R-Type III: The Third Lightning, the Bydo have returned from the depths of space, more resilient and terrifying than ever. To combat this extinction-level threat, the Galactic Federation deploys their most advanced fighter yet: the R-90 Ragnarok. As the pilot, your mission is to navigate through six grueling levels of enemy territory, ranging from organic hives to industrial hellscapes, ultimately reaching the heart of the Bydo mothership to destroy it once and for all. The atmosphere is thick with dread, perfectly capturing the "space horror" aesthetic that the franchise is famous for.
Core gameplay remains faithful to the "calculated" pace of the series, where memorization and positioning are just as important as quick reflexes. Players control the R-90 vessel, which utilizes a detachable Force Unit. This unit can be attached to the front or back of the ship to act as a shield and secondary weapon, or it can be launched into the environment to fire independently.
What sets R-Type III apart is the introduction of three distinct Force types selectable at the start of the game: the Round Force (classic style), the Shadow Force (featuring remote-controlled orbs), and the Cyclone Force (which offers powerful, localized energy attacks). Additionally, the R-90 is equipped with a "Hyper Drive" system. Beyond the standard charge shot, players can enter a temporary state of rapid, high-power fire. However, this comes with a risk; after the Hyper Drive period ends, the ship's weapons must cool down, leaving the player vulnerable. This adds a layer of risk-reward strategy that was revolutionary for the genre at the time.
This game was released on several platforms, including the SNES, GBA, and digital services like the Wii Virtual Console.
R-Type III: The Third Lightning is often cited as one of the best shooters ever made for the SNES. It showcased the console's
