In the pantheon of shoot 'em ups (shmups), few titles command as much respect as Raiden. Released in 1990 by Seibu Kaihatsu, this vertical scrolling masterpiece redefined what arcade players expected from the genre. With its tight controls, challenging bullet patterns, and iconic weapon systems, it became an instant classic that bridged the gap between early 80s shooters and the more chaotic "bullet hell" titles that would follow. Known in Japan as Raiden Densetsu (雷電伝説) on some home formats, the game’s popularity led to a vast array of ports and sequels, solidifying its place in gaming history as the gold standard for high-octane aerial combat.
The year is 2090. Earth has fallen victim to a sudden and overwhelming invasion by an alien race known as the Cranassians. These extraterrestrial invaders have seized control of the planet’s military infrastructure and are using mechanized terror to subjugate humanity. In a desperate last-ditch effort, the World Alliance develops a cutting-edge weapon: the Raiden Supersonic Attack Fighter. Based on captured alien technology, this craft is the only hope for reclaiming the planet. Players take the cockpit of this legendary ship, soaring over devastated landscapes, high-tech enemy bases, and orbital platforms to drive the invaders back into deep space.
Raiden offers a pure, unfiltered arcade experience consisting of eight intense vertical scrolling missions. Players must maneuver the Raiden craft with precision, dodging a relentless barrage of enemy fire while destroying ground targets, buildings, aircraft, and massive robotic bosses. The core of the gameplay revolves around its distinct power-up system. By collecting items, players can swap between the wide-spreading Red Vulcan cannon or the focused, high-damage Blue Laser. Complementing these are missile power-ups—the powerful Nuclear Missile or the strategic Homing Missile—and screen-clearing bombs.
One of the most unique mechanics in Raiden occurs when a player’s ship is destroyed; the fighter's fragments actually become projectiles that can damage nearby enemies, providing a small bit of revenge from beyond the grave. Scoring is also a major focus, with collectable gold medals scattered throughout the stages. Upon defeating the Stage 8 boss, the mission is considered complete, and the player is awarded a massive 1 million point bonus for each completed loop. However, the victory is short-lived, as the game loops back to Stage 1 with a significant spike in difficulty. In these subsequent loops, enemies shoot faster and at a much more rapid rate, testing the reflexes of even the most seasoned pilots.
